Jim Gottstein, JD, the founder of PsychRights, has noted that the public
is lead to believe that court orders for psychiatric treatment are
somehow necessary for the protection of the populace and of themselves.
He has gone on to comment that this is the type of logic which is
actually used to simply justify "the wholesale locking up and over
medicating of people who do not meet the legal requirements for these
